The Day After

14 Oct

A huge procession through Bangkok

king

The day after the King’s death was announced, his body was taken from the Siriraj Hospital where he had been living for the past several years, to the Grand Palace.  The body will stay there until the cremation, which will take place months from now.  The preparations for the cremation and final farewells will apparently take time and will likely be incredibly elaborate, as the entire country will be involved.

The BBC, which has always covered Thailand more comprehensively than most western large media organizations, except perhaps for the NY Times. It has a very good overview piece on its website of the day after the King’s death. You can see it here.  There is a video to watch if you’re interested.  The NYT does have an interesting op-ed piece that might be of interest to some.

I have received many letters from Thailand expressing very sincere sadness related to the King’s death.  He was the one major force that tended to glue the country’s opposing components together.  Hopefully, this glue will be long lasting and effective, even after his death.
